Plot summary
At Gates Academy, Ellis rooms with Barney Cannel, a cross-country runner, and befriends Rosenberg, a student who sneaks marijuana into the dorm. He also takes an interest in Minnie, who works at the school library and whom the other students call a prostitute, according to rumor. Barney often remarks that Goat Man and Wendy have gone silent, and a phone call home brings the news that Wendy has a new boyfriend named Bennet, who is rude to Ellis. Then a letter arrives from Frank, the father who left when Ellis was a baby and now lives in Washington, DC, inviting his son to Thanksgiving dinner.
