Plot summary
Jack McGurn is a successful amateur boxer who joins the Italian Mafia after his father is murdered. Within the organization he rises quickly alongside his friend Al Capone, and their business flourishes until the Italian mob is the country's most lucrative criminal organization. McGurn comes to serve as Al Capone's second in command. The Chicago underworld is also home to the Irish mafia, which gathers around Dion O'Banion and George "Bugs" Moran, and the two groups contend for criminal supremacy there. As the Italians grow stronger, tensions with the Irish build, and the rivalry between them hardens into a war.
