She follows Lila Littlewolf, a Mohawk bingo parlor employee driving the missing car, to her trailer. Lila has no buyer for the vehicle; she wants its large trunk. She offers Ray a share of fast money for taking people from Canada across the frozen St. Lawrence River into the United States. - Director Courtney Hunt heard the story from her husband's family in Malone, New York: Mohawks smuggling cigarettes by driving across the Saint Lawrence River when it freezes. She thought it an interesting subject for a film but had a hard time getting financial backers because so few people knew about the issue.
- Hunt first tested the idea as a short film shot at Akwesasne near Massena, New York, showing it at festival screenings and shopping it to producers until she finally had enough funding for a feature. Frozen River was then shot in sub-freezing temperatures over twenty-four days in March 2007.
