Plot summary
In Manhattan, Lauren Powell's boyfriend Charlie leaves for Rome, and she cannot afford a place on her own. Katie Steele gives manicures and cannot cover the rent increase on her Gramercy Park apartment. Their mutual friend Jesse brings Lauren in to share it, not saying that Katie lives there. Ten years earlier the two were college enemies, and they bicker from the start. Katie already takes calls on a phone sex line, though it earns her little. After Lauren loses her job, she proposes turning the line into a real business: Katie gets a landline, Lauren keeps the books, and soon she takes calls herself.

- The part of Katie was written specifically for Ari Graynor: Miller was inspired by Graynor's performance in Nick & Norah's Infinite Playlist (2008) and wrote her a letter asking her to join the production. The letter made Graynor cry.
