Plot summary
Louis Batiste is a doctor in a Creole-American community in Louisiana, and in 1962 he and his wife Roz raise three children: Eve, ten, her brother Poe and her sister Cisely. One night after a party Eve sees Louis with Matty Mereaux, a family friend. Cisely tells her she misread an innocent moment, but through the summer Eve finds more signs of her father's unfaithfulness, and Roz grows suspicious too. Cisely, entering puberty, clashes with Eve and Roz. Eve often visits her aunt Mozelle, who practices hoodoo.

- When Kasi Lemmons and producer Caldecot Chubb could not find interest from studios to finance the film, or potential directors to helm the production, Lemmons decided to direct it herself; Samuel L. Jackson came on board as both a producer and lead actor after reading the script.
- Meagan Good was originally cast to play the film's 10-year-old lead, Eve, but by the time financing finally came together she had grown too old for the part and was recast as Eve's older sister, Cisely.
- Made for just $4 million, Eve's Bayou grossed $14 million domestically, making it the most commercially successful independent film of 1997.
