Plot summary

The Democratic Party, the documentary argues, opposed both Donald Trump, the 45th president, and Abraham Lincoln, the 16th. The documentary draws comparisons between that party and fascist regimes, the Nazi Party among them. Accusations of racism, white supremacy and fascism, it says, are used to discredit the political right and to remove Trump from office. Fascism, it claims, is a left-wing ideology, and Nazi racial law drew on American racial law. Reenactments bring in figures such as Adolf Hitler, Sophie Scholl and Benito Mussolini, while interviewees include the political scientist Robert Paxton, the historian Allen C. Guelzo, the journalist Edwin Black and the white supremacist Richard Spencer. Critics and historians disputed the film's premise and its use of history.

Death of a Nation won two of its four Golden Raspberry Awards, one of them going to President Donald Trump as Worst Actor for clips of him in this film and Michael Moore's Fahrenheit 11/9. Trump and "His Self Perpetuating Pettiness" also took Worst Screen Combo for both documentaries.
Review aggregator Metacritic identified Death of a Nation as the worst-ranking film in the website's history, out of almost 12,000 films at the time, and several publications listed it among the worst films of 2018.
Dinesh D'Souza's documentary opened in 1,032 US theaters on August 3, 2018, making it the first political documentary in a decade to be released at over a thousand theaters; the previous one was Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed.
Historian Robert Paxton, who appears in the documentary, said he was interviewed under false pretenses and that his confirmation of Mussolini's and Hitler's welfare programs was used without context.
