Plot summary
Winter in Lawrenceton: librarian Aurora Teagarden and her friend Sally Allison, a newspaper reporter, are standing in Aurora's yard when the body of Chief of Police Frederick Burns falls from a small plane and lands a few feet away. The day before, Burns had asked Aurora where her boyfriend, Martin Bartell, could be found, and had warned her to stay out of police work. Detective Lynn Smith leads the case as acting chief, while Detective Pete Lambert, who wanted the post, looks to pin the killing on Martin. Burns's widow, Bess, is the sister of Aurora's boss, Lillian Tibbett. The town's real murders club debates the crime, and Aurora, herself a suspect, wants to learn what Burns meant to ask Martin.
