Plot summary
During World War II, the Hungarian physicist Leo Szilard leaves Germany on the last train out. In England he argues that a nuclear weapon can be built and that German scientists are already working on one of their own; English officials set his proposal aside and ignore it. He reaches the United States, and with Albert Einstein's help he wins the federal government over after a year of lobbying for the research. The Manhattan Project starts, and it is handed to General Leslie Groves, who picks J. Robert Oppenheimer to head the laboratory at Los Alamos, New Mexico, where the weapon is assembled.
