Summer break separates the students of Lawndale High. Daria and Jane are tense with each other because Daria has begun dating Tom, Jane's former boyfriend, and Daria also resents Tom's wealthy family. Jane enrolls in a summer art camp, where she meets Alison, an older artist, and Daniel, the instructor, who calls himself a genius. Daria wants only to read and sleep, but her mother Helen volunteers her as a counselor at Timothy O'Neill's day camp for children, where she meets Link, a twelve-year-old who voices his disillusionment. Quinn scores poorly on a pre-college admissions exam, and Helen hires David, a tutor who pushes her to take school seriously. Kevin and Brittany take lifeguard jobs, Mack drives an ice cream truck, and Jodie is buried in volunteer work.
