Plot summary
An elderly couple finds a boy wandering in the woods and brings him to an orphanage in Barkenton, South Carolina. He remembers nothing of his past and knows only his name, Daryl. Joyce and Andy Richardson, a couple with no children, take him into their home, and he befriends Turtle Fox, the neighbor boy. His social skills are limited, and he tells Turtle that he hopes his real parents will find him. He does well at school and beats Turtle at the video game Pole Position. Joyce is troubled that he never seems to need her, so Andy teaches him baseball; he hits one home run after another, then deliberately fumbles a play so that Joyce can comfort him.
