Plot summary
Betty Anne Waters and her brother Kenny grow up in Ayer, Massachusetts with a mother who pays them little attention, and the two go to separate foster homes. Betty Anne marries and raises two sons. Kenny, who has a daughter and a troubled history with the local police, is questioned by Sergeant Nancy Taylor when their neighbor Katherina Reitz Brow is stabbed to death in 1980, then released. Two years later he is arrested and tried on testimony from his ex-wife Brenda and his ex-girlfriend Roseanna. The evidence is circumstantial and the blood work only shows a type, so Kenny is found guilty of first degree murder and given life without parole. When Kenny attempts suicide in prison, Betty Anne, certain of his innocence, sets out to finish her schooling, college and law school to reopen his case.

The film's epilogue states that Betty Anne continued to work with the Innocence Project to prevent wrongful convictions, and that she won a major settlement against Nancy Taylor and the Ayer police department, although Taylor was immune from criminal prosecution due to the statute of limitations.SPOILER
In 2025, long after the film was released, further DNA testing identified the man who had actually committed the murder. He had died in 2004.- Martha Coakley, Attorney General of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, who was portrayed in the film, said after a pre-screening on October 12, 2010 that it was a compelling film but that there were legal inaccuracies and temporal exaggerations.
