Plot summary
At the Plaza Hotel in New York City, Amanda Clark hires archivist Jessica Cooper to research and assemble a display about how the hotel has marked Christmas since it opened in 1907. Jessica has three weeks to install it, and the records are so disorganized that the research alone could take a year. Nick Perrelli, who owns a Christmas decorating business and has been contracted to handle the hotel's seasonal decorations, works alongside her. Jessica finds history comforting; growing up she had no sense of what lay ahead, so the future unsettles her, and she gives little thought to what it holds with Dennis Park, her boyfriend of two years and a clinical biology Ph.D. candidate, though the two of them intend to reach Florida on Christmas Eve so she can meet his parents.
