Plot summary
Karlene Faith, a graduate student from the University of California, Santa Cruz, is given the job of teaching college classes to three inmates at the California Institution for Women. They are Leslie 'Lulu' Van Houten, Patricia 'Katie' Krenwinkel and Susan 'Sadie' Atkins. Instead of the murderers Karlene expected, she meets women who are polite and kind, and she understands that Charles Manson set their beliefs for them, that they adore him, and that she wants to change that. Lulu's memories return to Spahn Ranch, where Catherine 'Gypsy' Share brought her as a new recruit and Katie taught her what the Family believed: to give up the ego, live in the now, and share sex freely, with drugs passed around. Karlene gives them books.
