Plot summary
Tim Lippe lives in Brown Valley, Wisconsin, where he sells insurance for Brown Star and knows nearly everyone he passes. He believes his weekly encounters with Macy Vanderhei, his former seventh grade teacher, are love on both sides. Brown Star has won the insurer society's Two-Diamond prize for three straight years, on the strength of presentations by Roger Lemke. With Roger gone, owner Bill Krogstad sends Tim to the society's annual convention in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, to bring the prize home again and keep the agency afloat, though Tim doubts he can fill Roger's shoes. There he meets three other agents, Dean Ziegler, Joan Ostrowski-Fox and Ronald Wilkes, and Bree, who works the hotel parking lot.

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- The failure of an Iowa film production tax credit is reportedly why the film was shot in Ann Arbor, Michigan, rather than on location in Cedar Rapids, Iowa: Michigan provided a 42% tax rebate to movies filmed in specified "core communities" such as Ann Arbor.
- Ronald Wilkes, played by Isiah Whitlock Jr., is a self-described fan of The Wire and does an impersonation of Omar Little; Whitlock played Clay Davis on that series, but has said the references were written in before he was cast.
