Plot summary
Amy Cole leaves her small town behind to join the military, expecting to serve in Iraq. She is sent instead to Guantanamo Bay, where the U.S. government holds detainees, most of them from Arab countries. Cole works there as a guard and puts her name down for the initial reaction force. She keeps her distance from the men in her charge, though she dislikes how the facility is run. Ali, a detainee held at the base for eight years, tries to strike up conversations with her, and she turns him away. Corporal Ransdell, her superior officer, takes an interest in her, and Colonel James Drummond commands the base.
