Plot summary
Shakhtinsk, the early 2000s. Ten-year-old Yuliya Olshanskaya performs on the streets as one of a pickpocket crew. Pototskiy, who once danced at the Bolshoi and now drinks, spots her and carries her off to Moscow. There he pleads with his old teacher, Galina Beletskaya, to let the girl be seen at the ballet academy's third audition round. The second mistress, Lyudmila Untilova, is put off by the child's bold manners; Galina likes them and takes her in. Yuliya shares a room with Karina Kurnikova, whose well-off parents keep a close watch on her. Both girls rise to the top of the school, and their classmates wager on the fouetté contests the two hold.
