Plot summary
Danny Garrison is a boy with a severe heart condition who lives with his mother, Beth, and his sister, Eve. In his workshed he plays with marionettes, and there he meets Ben, the rat who once belonged to Willard Stiles and now leads an army of rodents. The two become companions, and Danny plays Ben a song he has written on the piano. Ben's colony turns violent as it searches for food, and the police set out poison and traps for the rats. Danny warns Ben about the traps, and when a bully comes to mock the boy, the rats bite the bully's legs and drive him off.

- Michael Jackson's version of the theme song "Ben", recorded in October 1971 at Motown's Los Angeles studio, became a number 1 pop hit in 1972, won a Golden Globe for Best Original Song, and was nominated for an Academy Award, losing to "The Morning After" from The Poseidon Adventure.
- Crispin Glover recorded a version of "Ben" for the soundtrack of the 2003 remake of Willard, and a music video for his version was produced featuring Glover.
