Trailer

Plot summary

Maryam grew up in a Muslim family and became a Catholic. She serves as a religious sister at a house for older nuns in Ambarawa, near Semarang, bathing the seven residents, cleaning, cooking and keeping the church, with help from Dinda, a young Muslim who brings milk and food. Pastor Martin presents her to Sister Monic and to Mila, who manages the house. Word comes that Martin will be replaced until Christmas by Yosef, Monic's foster child, who is to teach music to the sisters. Maryam finds herself drawn to him, and Monic cautions him about her, without changing his mind.

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.

  • Indonesia's Film Censorship Board passed two versions of Ave Maryam: a 74-minute cut rated 17+ for cinemas and an 85-minute uncut version rated 21+ for festivals. Many criticized the board for cutting scenes it deemed explicit instead of blurring them.
  • Maudy Koesnaedi initially declined to be part of Ave Maryam, but the film's director, Ertano, persuaded her to take part.
  • Maudy Koesnaedi fell ill during filming, causing a pause in production. Her husband permitted her to be involved only "if it could cure her sickness", but she was still ill during principal photography.
  • Ave Maryam was shot in only nine days, starting 26 November 2016 in Semarang and Yogyakarta, with borrowed equipment. As a noncommercial project, the crew took no share of the box office, the goal being to "color" Indonesian cinema.
  • Before starting production, the crew sent letters seeking approval from organizations including the Semarang diocese, aware the Indonesian public might find the subject sensitive. Director Ertanto Roby Soediskam said he was ready to face controversy, insisting the film was made honestly.
  • The gospel song for Ave Maryam's end credits is titled "Sacred Heart", after the Catholic devotion of the same name, and its inspiration came from the music of Lana Del Rey.
