Plot summary

At a fair in a nearby village in the Punjab of 1945, the farmer Angrej, there with his friend Aslam, meets Maado, and she feels the same about him. He proposes marriage; she hesitates, since neither family would accept a match the pair made themselves. His mother dislikes the very idea of love, though his sister-in-law offers to arrange the marriage. Haakam, a well-off landlord from Lahore with a family connection to Maado's grandmother, then starts visiting her house and flirting with her. Angrej sells his buffalo to buy Maado a gold bangle, and she tells him her family objects to his means.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Angrej (2015)

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.

  • Amrinder Gill said finding the right actresses to play Maado and Dhann Kaur was a challenge; Aditi Sharma and debutante Sargun Mehta were cast as the leads only after a lengthy auditioning process and multiple screen tests.
  • Production designer Raashid Rangrez said the producers chose Rajasthan over Punjab because its semi-arid terrain better stood in for Punjab before the green revolution, and because the "authentic 1945 setup" needed an earthy look.
  • The village scenes of the rural Punjab and Rajasthan shoot were filmed at Suratgarh, a remote town near the two states' border, because the team wanted to depict a life without electric poles, mobile towers or modern-day lifestyle.
  • The Punjabi wedding costumes were made of khadi handloom fabric brought from Banaras, Bikaner and Jalandhar. Production designer Rangrez and his team, including Manmeet Bindra, used white cloth and dyed it later so they could create their own colours.
