SPOILER
The makers of Dear Jassi kept the full extent of the story, including that it revolves around a murder, out of early marketing and the premiere so the twist would hit harder, selling it as a simple romance.- Dear Jassi is drawn from the real case of Jaswinder Kaur Sidhu, a Punjabi Canadian woman who fell in love with and married a working-class man her family did not approve of, turning her family against her.
SPOILER
Dear Jassi won the Platform Prize at the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival, and in his acceptance speech director Singh asked the media to stop using the term "honor killing", arguing it can make a murder seem justifiable.
