Plot summary
A man is sailing alone across the Indian Ocean when he wakes to find water pouring into his cabin. A shipping container adrift at sea has struck the hull and torn it open. The boat's navigation and communications gear no longer works, so he has no way to fix his position or call for help. He patches the breach and pumps the cabin clear by hand. A tropical storm is coming toward him.

- Principal photography on All Is Lost took place at Baja Studios in Rosarito Beach, Mexico, a facility originally built for the 1997 film Titanic, where the crew filmed for two months in the water tank and only two or three days in the actual ocean.
