Plot summary
Mary Horowitz writes crosswords for the Sacramento Herald and her pet hamster is her only true friend. Her parents set her up on a blind date with Steve Miller, a cameraman for CCN. She talks about vocabulary without stopping, and Steve fakes a phone call about covering news out of town. He tells Mary he wishes she could be there. She believes him and creates a crossword titled All About Steve, which gets her fired. Mary then follows Steve around the country. Hartman Hughes, a CCN reporter, encourages her, hoping her knowledge will help him become a news anchor. On the road, she annoys bus passengers until the driver abandons her, hitches a ride with a trucker named Norm, and travels with two protesters, Elizabeth and Howard.
