Plot summary

In 1947 a radio operator in New Mexico follows a signal of strange patterns to its source and is never seen again. The same signal resurfaces in the present day, relayed from the Falkland Islands to the United States, and a satellite photographs an unidentified object on the Antarctic snow. Julian Rome, a cryptologist who teaches at the University of California, Berkeley, is asked to look into it and flies to a research base at the South Pole, where scientists tend a greenhouse of genetically modified plants. There the team finds what looks like an alien vessel sealed in a block of ice, a pod that gives off the encrypted signal. Julian sets about decoding it while others try to open the shell.
