Plot summary
Yogita is shooting a documentary about Anurag Kashyap when he and Anil Kapoor trade insults at a MAMI event, arguing over whether a director or an actor matters more. Kashyap throws a glass of water in Kapoor's face, and the scandal costs him work and allies. On Christmas Eve, Kapoor's birthday, Kashyap visits his set and pitches a story about a director who abducts an aging actor's daughter. Kapoor learns that his daughter Sonam has been taken, and Kashyap imposes rules: no police, no outside help, phone calls on speakerphone, and Yogita's camera running throughout. Kashyap gives him until sunrise to find her. With a live feed showing a masked man holding her, Kapoor begins his search in Mumbai.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about AK vs AK (2020)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- The Indian Air Force objected to a scene in the trailer showing Anil Kapoor cursing in an inaccurate IAF uniform; Kapoor said his character was only an actor playing an IAF officer and posted a video apologising for hurting anyone's sentiments.
- The makers first considered Aamir Khan and Akshay Kumar for the "actor" role, deciding against Aamir and being rebuffed by Akshay; Shahid Kapoor then took the part and the title became AK vs SK.
- Shahid Kapoor had already started filming when he pulled out over date clashes, and the film was shelved in 2016; Vikramaditya Motwane revived it in 2019 and cast Anil Kapoor instead, saying he "always wanted a commercial star".
- Anil Kapoor said much of the film's interactions were not staged, including the requests for selfies from his fans that appear throughout his on-screen search.
- Composer Alokananda Dasgupta said she did not understand the film's "technical depth" at first, so she decided to interpret it as "three films within a film" and build the score on that idea.
- Some scenes were shot at Anurag Kashyap's actual house, while sets were built to stand in for the streets of Mumbai and for Anil Kapoor's house.
- Shooting took only 21 days in late 2019 or early 2020; Anil Kapoor called it "the fastest film I have done in my career".
