Plot summary
Savita lives in Dongargaon, a small town in Maharashtra, and studies at college. She wants to finish her education and find work of her own. Daulatrao Wandhare, her father, farms cotton and struggles to make a living, and everyone around him treats marriage as the only route to a woman's betterment. He sets out to find her a suitable groom. Families of prospective grooms visit one after another. Savita is seated on a stool and examined, judged by her skin color, her height and her caste, while what she thinks goes unheard. The men of those families decide. The women of her household, her mother among them, serve the food and watch in silence. In college a lecturer teaches about the empowerment of women, and Savita has an unspoken bond with him.

- Director Jayant Digambar Somalkar shot the whole film in 22 days in a single schedule, using sync sound in a village where locals did not know the concept, so background noise was constant; his first-time actors often left the set to tend their farms or water their buffaloes.
- Nandini Chikte auditioned for the lead on the very first day, telling Jayant Digambar Somalkar she could dance and cry on cue; he stayed undecided, so she auditioned again the next day, better prepared, and won the part.
- The house where Sthal was filmed is the very home where director Jayant Digambar Somalkar was born, and the college attended by his heroine Savita is the same one Somalkar studied at.
