Plot summary
Billy Edwards works in advertising in Toronto, where he lives with his wife Antoinette, their son Bogart and the family dog, Merton. A filmmaker who knows the couple and believes their marriage is in trouble proposes a documentary about marital conflict, and Billy and Antoinette, hoping to find what has gone wrong between them, agree to let a crew into their home. For ten weeks a cinematographer and a sound technician film the household in the cinema vérité style. The filmmaker stays out of the house so that his presence will not change how the family behaves, and shapes the finished film afterward from the footage shot each day.

- Director Allan King, sensing trouble in his friend Billy Edwards's marriage, had the couple's Toronto home filmed for ten weeks by cinematographer Richard Leiterman and sound technician Chris Wangler, but kept out of the house himself so Billy and Antoinette Edwards would behave naturally, doing his "directing" only while editing each day's footage.
- The Ontario Censor Board unexpectedly let a skinny dipping scene stay in the film, but insisted that four of the film's 32 uses of the word "fuck" be cut from the dialogue.
- The film led Billy and Antoinette Edwards to decide to have a second child, although the couple had divorced by 1972.
