Plot summary
Frances Lacey is a widow raising six children in Los Angeles in 1962. She is fired from a potato chip plant after a supervisor gropes her, and that same day the police return her eldest son Shayne home for taking coins out of payphones. Convinced the city is no place for her family, Frances sells whatever they cannot take with them and drives the children out of state. Once their cash runs out, she gives up her wedding ring to pay for car repairs. The family gets as far as Hankston, Idaho, where Frances notices a half-built wooden frame across the road from Moon's Nursery. The nursery's owner, Mr. Munimura, holds the deed to the land. With no money, she offers to buy the place by putting herself and her children, the Lacey Tribe, to work for him.
