Plot summary
Maria and Paul, married and in their forties, travel through Spain with their young daughter. Claire, a younger woman, is traveling with them. Their route leads toward Madrid, and in one town along the way they hear that a local man murdered his wife and her lover and is still at large in the area. A violent thunderstorm settles over the town, and the travelers have no choice but to spend the night in the single hotel it has, where every room is taken by others caught in the same position. Maria, an alcoholic, lives in a dream state and appears to be quietly steering Paul into a sexual relationship with Claire. Out in the storm with a bottle, she watches the two of them kissing on a balcony.
