Plot summary
Ree Dolly is seventeen and lives in the Ozark back country of Missouri, where she is the primary caregiver for her mother, Connie, who is mentally ill, her twelve-year-old brother Sonny and her six-year-old sister Ashlee. Her father, Jessup, has been away a long time and earns his living running a methamphetamine lab. Sheriff Baskin tells Ree that her father has skipped bail and that their house and property were put up as bond: if he misses his court date, they lose their home.
