Plot summary
Will Carlson, about thirty, lives in a rundown duplex in New Jersey and works as a birthday party clown, a job he loves because he enjoys making children happy. The pay is poor, and he is behind on rent for his own house and for his mother's nursing home room. His best friend is Syd. Wanting to keep clowning but earn more, Will invents a bachelor party act: he arrives in clown makeup and lingerie, posing as a gay clown stripper sent by mistake before the real entertainment. Syd calls the idea vulgar, so Will takes the name Vulgar and advertises in the want ads. A booking takes him to a motel, where a man named Ed and his sons Gino and Frankie beat and assault him.

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Radio host Howard Stern was sent a pre-release copy of Vulgar, watched less than half, threw it in the trash and bashed it for three weeks. Kevin Smith called in to Stern's show on April 26, 2002, and Stern's first question was "Why?".
- Despite Stern's repeated warnings not to see Vulgar, people in his studio said his continued bashing only made them more intrigued, and some went to see it anyway out of curiosity.
