Plot summary
Keng is a soldier posted to a small city in the Thai countryside. His troop's task is to look into the deaths of cattle at farms nearby. He meets Tong, a villager, in the field, and they speak again when Keng spots him riding in a truck; soon a romantic friendship grows between them. At the ice factory where Tong works, Keng lends a hand. Driving an ice delivery truck one night, the two find a sick dog at the roadside and take it to a veterinarian, who reports that it has cancer, and Tong signs a form so it can receive chemotherapy. They also visit a movie theater together.

- At the press screening of Tropical Malady at the 2004 Cannes Film Festival, several audience members walked out before the film was over and some who stayed until the end booed it, yet the jury headed by Quentin Tarantino gave it the Jury Prize.
- Tropical Malady won the Jury Prize at the 2004 Cannes Film Festival; it was the first Thai film to be in the main competition at Cannes, and the first Thai film to win a prize at one of the "Big Three" film festivals.
- In 2018 the Thai Film Archive registered Tropical Malady as one of Thailand's national heritage films, on its annual listing.
