Plot summary

Single and in her thirties, Kassie Larson decides she cannot wait any longer to have a baby. She wants a donor she can meet in person rather than use a sperm bank. Her best friend Wally Mars objects, and he has feelings for her that he has never admitted. Kassie chooses Roland Nilson, a charming and married assistant professor. At her insemination party, Wally meets Roland and immediately dislikes him. Wally is drunk and later remembers nothing of the night. The insemination succeeds, and Kassie is pregnant. She tells Wally she is returning to her Minnesota hometown, where she believes a child should be raised.
