Plot summary
Lilly and Jack Maynard paint a mural in the room of their infant Katie. Months later, after Katie's death, Jack lives in a mental hospital and Lilly works as a supermarket assistant manager, driving two hours each week to visit him. A counselor urges Lilly to see someone about her own grief. At home she tackles the overgrown yard and garden, where a starling nesting in the tree attacks her. She brings her wounds to Larry, a psychiatrist turned veterinarian, who is hesitant at first but agrees to treat her. The two begin an unlikely friendship, and Jack remains uncooperative in his sessions at the facility.
