Plot summary
Seventeen-year-old Lennie Walker is a musical prodigy, and she is grieving the sudden death of her older sister, Bailey. Bailey was the outgoing sister while Lennie is shy. Lennie lives among the redwood trees of Northern California, surrounded by her grandmother's enormous roses. When Joe Fontaine, a charismatic new student, arrives at her school, she finds herself drawn to him. Toby Shaw, Bailey's boyfriend, is devastated by the same death, and the grief the two of them share pulls Lennie toward him. Being with each of them gives her something she needs, and her bond with Toby begins to affect the love growing between her and Joe.
