Plot summary
Years at a sheltered boarding school end for Carla Tate, a young woman with a mild intellectual disability, and she returns to her family. Her mother Elizabeth is uneasy about her youngest daughter and arranges a life for Carla that goes beyond what Carla asks for. Carla's father Radley works as a dentist and is a recovering alcoholic. Carla wants a diploma from a polytechnic school and an apartment of her own, and she makes her case at home. At the polytechnic she meets Danny McMahon, another student with a developmental disability, and the two become friends. Danny lives on an allowance from his wealthy father.
