Plot summary
Months after the car crash that killed his father Dan, Brent Mitchell still carries the guilt, and his mother Carla has been left emotionally broken. Lola Stone invites him to the school formal; he says no and plans to go with his girlfriend Holly. Lola watches the two of them in Holly's car. Brent walks to a cliff near his home and decides against taking his own life. Someone knocks him unconscious, and he comes to tied to a chair in a house done up like a formal, with Lola, her father Eric and a lobotomized woman called Bright Eyes.

- In March 2013, at Chester Crown Court, a judge described a sadistic torture murder as a re-enactment of a scene from this film, and said the defendant particularly liked The Loved Ones. The victim was brutally beaten and sustained 49 knife wounds; the killer was sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 30 years.
- The Australian Classification Board originally gave the film an R18+ rating, but an appeal by the Review Board replaced it with MA15+, on the grounds that the comedy aspect of the film mitigated both its sadistic aspect and the impact of its violence.
- The Motion Picture Association of America initially assigned the film an NC-17, so its content was toned down for an R-rated U.S. release. It then ran only in a limited American release, shown in Austin, Chicago, Houston, Los Angeles, New York and San Francisco on 1 June 2012.
- The Loved Ones ranks 49th on Rotten Tomatoes' Top 100 Horror Movies list, and the site's consensus calls it a striking directorial debut for the Australian director Sean Byrne.
