Plot summary
In December 2004 the Bennett family is at a resort in Khao Lak, Thailand, for the Christmas holiday: Henry and Maria with their sons Lucas, Thomas and Simon. On December 26 the Indian Ocean tsunami hits, and Maria and Lucas survive by clinging to debris, though Maria is seriously injured. They help a toddler named Daniel, and local people carry Maria and Lucas to a hospital in Takua Pa. Henry and the two younger boys also come through the wave. Simon and Thomas stay with another family, and Henry remains behind to search the rubble for Maria and Lucas. A German tourist named Karl, also cut off from his own family, lends Henry his phone, and Henry calls Maria's father to promise he will keep looking.

- Bayona committed to working with real water rather than a computer-generated wave because he wanted the story to be authentic, so surges were filmed in slow motion in a Spanish water tank using miniatures destroyed by a huge wave. Watts and Holland spent five weeks in the tank, and Holland, aged 14, called it a "scary environment".
