Plot summary
Lucy Hutton and Joshua Templeman sit face to face at a publishing company that was formed by a merger, both serving as assistants to its joint CEOs. Lucy holds a master's in literature and bends over backwards for the people around her; Josh, who has an MBA, trimmed the workforce by a third. They aim petty psychological games at each other, shifting items on Josh's orderly desk and mocking each other's working style. When a Managing Director role opens, both want it, and neither will work beneath the other, so they agree that the one who loses it quits. Their habit of watching each other is complicated by an attraction Lucy did not expect.
