Plot summary
The story borrows loosely from Ford Madox Ford's 1915 novel The Good Soldier. Beth Vest works in urban conservation in Manhattan. She wants a good job, good friends and a man to share the city with, and she falls for Tommy Fielding, an investment broker whose charm and skill at his work impress his boss, Cash. Tommy brings Daniel Seaver, a newcomer to finance with a background in avionics and computers, under his wing, teaching him the trade and how to handle social situations, women included. Daniel, Tommy's nervous and naive co-worker, adapts to the lifestyle his mentor shows him. He meets Beth without knowing that she is Tommy's girlfriend.
