Plot summary
Sheffield's steel mills have closed, and Gaz has no money for the child support he owes his ex-wife Mandy, who is seeking sole custody of their son Nathan. With his friend Dave, he steals scrap metal from the abandoned works. When Gaz sees a crowd of women queuing for a Chippendales show, he decides that a striptease act of local men could raise what he needs. Lomper, the mill security guard whose suicide attempt Gaz and Dave interrupt, joins first, then Gerald, their former foreman, who hides his unemployment from his wife. An open audition brings in Horse, a good dancer, and Guy.

- Hugo Speer told The Guardian in 2019 that the climactic scene was shot in a very cold working men's club starting about midday, with makeup and costume staff thrusting glasses of alcohol into the actors' hands between takes. The extras were not told the men would go all the way, so their reaction was completely natural.
- New Zealand playwrights Anthony McCarten and Stephen Sinclair filed a £180 million lawsuit against the producers of The Full Monty in 1998, claiming the film blatantly infringed their play Ladies Night, which had toured both Britain and New Zealand.
- City on the Move, Jim and Marie-Luise Coulthard's film about a modern, thriving Sheffield, went virtually unnoticed until the Coulthards were approached about including some of the footage in The Full Monty for a payment of £400, which they accepted.
- Anne Dudley's Oscar for Best Score was a surprise, and some critics felt it undeserved, inasmuch as the award is for original music and most of the film's memorable moments had jukebox favorites playing. Dudley composed "about 20 minutes' worth of music" for the film.
- The production and shooting was said to be very challenging, with Robert Carlyle saying: "The Full Monty was a tough shoot, it really really was. Horrible."
- Shiregreen WMC branded itself "the home of The Full Monty", but it closed down in November 2019, and the building was destroyed by fire on 9 August 2026 after being left to become derelict.
