Plot summary
Conor Ludlow and Eleanor Rigby meet over a restaurant meal he cannot pay for, and the two run out laughing. Years later they are married in New York, and their infant son has died. Eleanor retreats to her bed, grieving, while Conor works at the restaurant he runs with his friend Stuart, the cook. After Eleanor is hospitalized, she asks Conor to let her disappear for a while, then cuts off her phone and all contact. She moves into her parents' house in Westport, where her sister Katy and her young son also live, and at her father's suggestion enrolls at NYU, joining Professor Friedman's class. Conor, unable to stay in the empty apartment, moves back in with his father and learns from Stuart that Eleanor has been seen near the university.
