Plot summary
In the 23rd century, nuclear war has destroyed most of humanity, and lingering radiation has pushed the birth rate below replacement level. A robotic labor force keeps the survivors comfortable, and humanoids, machines with blue-gray synthe-skin, metallic eyes and no hair, work closely with people. The Order of Flesh and Blood, whose members call the humanoids clickers, considers them a danger to humanity and does not stop at bombings. Captain Kenneth Cragis, one of the Order's leaders, meets Maxine, who is opposed to the group, and the two fall in love. Dr. Raven has developed a technique that copies the memory and personality of a person who has just died into a robotic replica, and he works with the humanoids in secret.

- The Creation of the Humanoids is often called Andy Warhol's favorite film, a claim traced to a 1964 art review that quoted him calling it the best movie he had ever seen; the claim is said to have led Warhol to create the Andy Warhol Robot in the 1980s, staged by Peter Sellars and Lewis Allen.
- Although the film's limited budget shows in its blank-flat sets and stock-rental costumes, the producers paid the added expense of filming in color at a time when black-and-white was still standard for major-studio productions and accepted by audiences.
- The humanoids' metal-ball eyes were large reflective scleral contact lenses, furnished by optometrist Dr. Louis M. Zabner, who pioneered contact lenses that changed actors' eye color; made of hard plastic, they were uncomfortable and had to be removed frequently.
- The line "You are a robot" from the film was sampled in the Powerman 5000 song "When Worlds Collide", and the phrase is also sampled in the menu theme of the game Metal Arms: Glitch in the System.
- Rather than ask actors to shave their heads for a few days' low-budget work, the makers hid their hair with glued-on latex "bald wigs", flattened eyebrows stuck down with putty to hide the edges, and painted the actors' heads and rubber gloves blue-gray.
