Plot summary
Global Transportation Systems, known as GTX, cuts staff during a recession. Bobby Walker, a corporate climber with a six-figure salary, a wife, and two children, is among the first let go. He takes outplacement help and begins looking for work. Phil Woodward, a senior manager who rose over thirty years from the factory floor to the executive offices, is also dismissed. Gene McClary, the company's number two executive, argues against the layoffs, asking CEO James Salinger why GTX can fund new headquarters while eliminating jobs. Salinger answers that the cuts protect profits and the stock price against a rumored hostile takeover. Walker's job search brings no offers, and the family starts to lose its luxuries.
