Plot summary
The Vigils, a secret society of students at Trinity, a Catholic boys' boarding school with a formal hierarchy of brothers and an informal one among the boys, hand new boy Jerry Renault an assignment: he is to refuse to sell chocolates in the school's annual fundraiser for ten days. Brother Leon, the acting headmaster, needs the chocolates sold, and both his standing and the society's depend on the sale succeeding. When the ten days pass, Jerry keeps refusing, now on his own, and gives no reason when he is asked. The school's opinion turns against him, and Archie Costello, the society's Assigner, orders the boys to step up the pressure.
