Plot summary
Hart Crane is an American poet of the early twentieth century, the son of a wealthy businessman in Cleveland. He writes poems and recites them at poetry readings, and he loves men. His life is told in chapters titled Voyages, after his own lyric poem of that name, and the opening chapters include an attempt he makes on his own life. He travels to New York, Cuba and Paris. In New York he works as a copywriter in advertising, a job he finds frustrating. His relationship with his father is troubled, while his relationship with his mother is close. Alcohol becomes a difficulty for him.
