Plot summary
The film tells two separate stories that share no characters, titled Fiction and Non-Fiction. In Fiction, Vi, a graduate student, dates Marcus, an undergraduate with cerebral palsy, and both take a writing course from Mr. Scott, a well-known author. Catherine is another student in the class. In Non-Fiction, Toby Oxman sells shoes and hopes to make documentaries, and he sets out to film teenagers in the wake of Columbine. He ends up narrowing his scope to one unhappy family in suburban New Jersey. The Livingstons are Marty and Fern and their sons Brady, Scooby and Mikey. Scooby is alienated and wants above all to be famous, and Consuelo is the family's overworked housekeeper.

- A "red box" was placed over the rough sex scene between Selma Blair and Robert Wisdom in the American release, bending MPAA rules to win an R rating instead of NC-17. The box is absent from the international version, but the American DVD offers both.
- Todd Solondz planned a third segment, "Autobiography", about a closeted football player played by James Van Der Beek, with an explicit gay sex scene. The whole segment was cut, reportedly under studio pressure over its graphic homosexual content.
- Selma Blair said the cast had no idea how severely the film would be cut. Her own part was reduced and performances by James Van Der Beek, Emmanuelle Chriqui, Adam Hann-Byrd and Heather Matarazzo were dropped from the final edit.
- The censored cover of Xiu Xiu's 2003 album A Promise, a red rectangle covering a penis, is a reference to the red box used to censor the film's "Fiction" sex scene.
