Plot summary
A runaway from Nottingham, Tomo arrives in London and loses what little he has when three boys take his bag and beat him. He meets Marek in a café, a Polish teenager who lives in Somers Town with his father, a construction worker on the new rail link who drinks too much. Marek has been photographing Maria, the French waitress at the café, and tells Tomo she is his girlfriend. Tomo teases him by running off with the pictures, then hands them back, and the two become friends. Marek takes Tomo in, letting him sleep in his room and eat with him, but insists his father must never find out that Tomo is there.
