Biography

Seymour Hersh is an American journalist and political author known for investigative reporting, starting out at the City News Bureau of Chicago in 1959. Born in Chicago in 1937, he later worked for United Press International and the Associated Press, covering the Pentagon and then joining the AP's first investigative unit before going freelance. His reporting in 1969 uncovered the My Lai massacre and the cover-up that followed, bringing him national fame and the 1970 Pulitzer Prize for International Reporting. The New York Times hired him in 1972, and there he wrote about Watergate, the secret bombing of Cambodia and CIA spying at home. He has written 11 books, including The Price of Power: Kissinger in the Nixon White House, which won the National Book Critics Circle Award, and in 2004 he detailed the abuse of prisoners at Abu Ghraib for The New Yorker. His other honors include two National Magazine Awards and five George Polk Awards.

First role
Hersh became a member of the AP's first special investigative unit in 1967. He left to work as a freelancer after his editors cut down a piece he had written about the U.S.'s secret chemical and biological weapons programs.
A change of course
Before entering the University of Chicago Law School in 1959, Hersh sold Xerox machines. He was thrown out after his first year because his grades were poor.
