Nien-Jen Wu

Nien-Jen Wu is a screenwriter, director and actor who began publishing stories in newspapers in 1975. After writing his first screenplay in 1978, he took a creative supervisor role at Central Motion Picture Corporation, where he collaborated with directors including Hou Hsiao-Hsien and Edward Yang. He wrote more than 70 screenplays and helped drive the New Taiwanese Cinema Movement during the early 1980s. His collaboration with Anne Hui on Song of Exile (1990) helped him set a record for most Golden Horse Awards, and his novels and screenplays made him a best-selling author in Taiwan. He made his directorial debut with A Borrowed Life (1994), which won the Grand Prize at the Torino Film Festival and Best Actor and International Critics awards at the Thessaloniki Film Festival. He wrote and directed Buddha Bless America (1996). Commercials led to acting work; he starred in Edward Yang's A One And A Two and ran Wu's Productions while working in commercials and television.
