Neil deGrasse Tyson
Biography
Neil deGrasse Tyson is an American astrophysicist who is also known as a science communicator. Born in Manhattan in 1958, he studied at Harvard and Columbia University and worked as a postdoctoral researcher at Princeton. In 1994, he joined the Hayden Planetarium and became its director in 1996. He founded the Department of Astrophysics at the American Museum of Natural History. He wrote for Natural History magazine from 1995 to 2005, and his essays were collected in books including Astrophysics for People in a Hurry (2017) and Death by Black Hole (2007). He hosted NOVA ScienceNow from 2006 to 2011 and the podcast StarTalk, which became a National Geographic series in 2015. He presented Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey in 2014 and Cosmos: Possible Worlds in 2020. His film appearances include Ice Age: Collision Course (2016). He received the NASA Distinguished Public Service Medal in 2004 and the Public Welfare Medal in 2015.

A first
Tyson popularized the term Manhattanhenge in a 2002 Natural History column to describe the two days each year when the setting sun aligns with Manhattan's street grid; he had coined it in 1996, inspired by the sun's solstice alignment with Stonehenge.
A first
Tyson was 14 when the Explorers Club of New York gave him a scholarship to see the June 1973 total solar eclipse from the SS Canberra. Aboard that scientific cruise were two thousand scientists, engineers, and enthusiasts, among them Neil Armstrong, Scott Carpenter, and Isaac Asimov.
Big break
Astronomer Carl Sagan, a faculty member at Cornell University, tried to recruit Tyson to Cornell for his undergraduate studies, a story Tyson later told in his book The Sky Is Not the Limit.
Early training
In high school Tyson took astronomy courses at the Hayden Planetarium, which he called "the most formative period" of his life. He named Mark Chartrand III, the planetarium's director then, as his "first intellectual role model," and Chartrand's humorous teaching inspired Tyson to explain the universe to others.
